Job Summary

  • The Desktop Engineer primarily develops the overall design and implementation of the Company’s virtual & physical desktop environment, software distribution infrastructure, product lifecycle management, and desktop security within this leading environmental company.

  • The Desktop Engineer also participates in defining hardware standards, engineering and securing the standard desktop platform, implementation of policies and procedures to ensure consistency with company goals, industry best practices and regulatory requirements.

  • Is recognized as a technical leader within the department and organization, with emphasis on the architecture and design of the desktop environment.

  • Has the ability to demonstrate breadth of knowledge across multiple areas of information technology.

  • The candidate may be a key team member on strategic or enterprise-wide technology projects or issues.


Main Accountability 1: Working Together

  • Effective communication both horizontally across other IT teams as well as vertically to management and to business so that internal pain points are solved and confusion is minimized

  • Broadly disseminate information regarding new technological developments

  • Provide technical guidance and expertise throughout the design process and updates designs and changes throughout deployment lifecycle

  • Lead strategic projects to assure that virtualization solutions meet business objectives, are secure, reliable, meet service levels, and are recoverable

  • Work closely with other technical groups locally and remotely.

  • Work with Information Security to address vulnerabilities and find the appropriate fixes.

  • Work closely with cross functional engineering team in analyzing, designing and implementing Windows Infrastructure & System best practices.

  • Interface with Data Center Operations to ensure server is installed in a timely manner.

  • Interact with customer, technical staff, R&D, application development and 3rd party Vendors.

  • Communicate with vendors and other groups to determine needs.

  • Works effectively both as a team member and independently.

  • Partners with application owners to assess platform standards and virtualization opportunities to promote resiliency, performance, capacity and availability advantages.

  • Leverages modern scripting and automation techniques focusing system and process efficiencies.

Main Accountability 2: Leadership

  • Be a point of technical coordination escalation for on-site problems and issues if escalated to Level 2.

  • Demonstrable Troubleshooting, Triage and Incident Management skills.

  • Executes change management and audit processes consistently with documented procedures.

  • Shows initiative and acts independently to resolve problems.

Main Accountability 3: Technical Execution

  • Develop the overall design and implementation of the Company's desktop environment and software distribution infrastructure.

  • Propose, design, and implement enhancements and additions to current environment

  • Development and deployment of unattended operating system installations for workstations/desktops/laptops

  • Develop technical solutions to support migration from physical desktops to virtual desktops and the tools needed to maintain the virtual desktop lifecycle.

  • Architect, design and implementation of SMS/SCCM as well as deployment of applications within a large scale environment.

  • Generate project plans and subsequent progress reports (including appropriate size, timeframe, and technical requirements)

  • Implementation and maintenance of company-wide desktop standards and procedures

  • Develop utilities to streamline standards and deployment methodologies

  • Automation of engineered scripted solutions to address configuration issues or desired results.

  • Design, creation and workflow design of Group Policy Objects (GPO) managing the security and configuration of the Windows and Citrix Desktop platforms.

  • Design standards for user persona management and transition of operational roles

  • Solutions expected to deliver the best possible user experience, with a focus on resiliency of design, migration / upgrade strategy, and supportability.

  • Keep systems current and standard, while reducing variation

Accountability 4: Availability

  • Participate in 24/7 on call service and emergency onsite support if necessary.

Main Accountability 5: Documentation

  • Must be able to prepare, present, and maintain technical documentation.

  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation as it relates to server and network topology, equipment, and configuration(s).

  • Ability to establish and define automated system installation/configuration procedures.

  • Ability to create System Run Books, defining day-to-day support, maintenance, troubleshooting knowledgebase of the infrastructure.



  • Minimum requirements to perform the job: 4 year college degree

Work Experience Required

  • Seasoned-Professional-7+ years’ experience.

  • Requires 5 years industry experience plus experience implementing ITIL software and deployment concepts through use of various technologies, including knowledge of computer/network systems infrastructure requirements and standards.

  • Strong understanding of networking, infrastructure and client side architectures, software lifecycle, and system design.

  • Designing and architectural experience implementing SMS/SCCM (and/or other desktop management suites) as well as have adept experience deploying applications within a Global infrastructure.

  • Experience understanding of current industry trends and their advantages with ability to right fit into an existing environment.

  • In-depth knowledge of the registry and file system security.

  • Strong programming knowledge of C# or VB.net programming languages and scripting skills in multiple languages

  • Propose, design, and implement enhancements and additions to current environment

  • Generate project plans and subsequent progress reports (including appropriate size, timeframe, and technical requirements)

  • Advanced level troubleshooting skills and root cause analysis of the Desktop environment.

  • Experience troubleshooting and enhancing desktop security and configuration management through Group Policy Objects (GPO), in-depth experience with Active Directory and GPOs/GPPs as well as the ability to create custom policies.

  • Displays in-depth competency in Citrix, VMWare, SMS/SCCM, AppSense (or User Environment Management equivalent), DLP, Imaging automation, packaging, local application virtualization, endpoint protection suites, firewall solutions, and troubleshooting utilities.

  • Extensive Systems Engineering experience within e-commerce or financial services industry.

  • Experience in a large corporate multi-domain/multi-site organization.

  • Excellent written, verbal communication skills as well as people skills with ability to handle difficult personnel situations.

  • Excellent computer skills necessary in Word, Excel, Presentation, Project and Visio.

  • Strong understanding of project management methodologies and processes.

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.

  • Provides expert level complex, high-level technical support for all systems relating to the desktop, and carries out complex assignments requiring the development of new and/or improved techniques and procedures.

  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification required

  • Citrix CCA for Citrix XenDesktop certification required
